Barone di Villagrande

Barone di Villagrande

Our estate is located on the slop of Mountain Etna where we cultivate our vineyards since 1727. Here the connection with the grapes becomes indissoluble, giving birth to the oldest vines cultivation history on these lands followed by 10 generations.

In 1968 the D.O.C. Etna was recognised, the first Denomination of Controlled Origin in Sicily. The disciplinary was written by Carlo Nicolosi Asmundo, enology and alimentary techniques professor at the University of Catania. We wrote a fundamental page on the Etna wines history.

We are on the eastern slope of Etna that overlooks Taormina and the Ionian Sea at a height of 700 metres, where the climate is not Sicilian, Mediterranean or continental, but Etnean. Temperatures and precipitations are affected by the volcanic activity and the altitude which results in a lower alcohol content compared to the average of Sicilian wines, with a peculiar richness in fixed acidity and extract.

Those are mountains vineyards, surrounded by oak and chestnut forests that originates intense and recognisable scents. The Etna Bianco DOC Superiore is born in a volcanic field, perfect for the Carricante, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio vines.

In those vineyards we want to exalt the soul of the territory. This is our land and we believe in its strength.
