Etna Hazelnuts: A Tradition Growing Again on the Slopes of the Volcano

There is a side of Mount Etna that many visitors never discover. Beyond the vineyards, lava flows, and breathtaking views, there is a landscape of hazelnut groves that have shaped the mountain’s slopes for generations. This is where the famous Etna Hazelnuts are grown, one of the area’s most important agricultural products. It is a tradition with deep local roots that is now enjoying a new period of growth and appreciation.

Hazelnut farming spread across Sicily between the late 19th and early 20th centuries because the trees adapted very well to the local environment. The slopes of Mount Etna proved to be the perfect place for them to grow. Their strong, deep roots help prevent soil erosion and protect the rich volcanic soil. Today, hazelnut groves are still an important part of the landscape in many towns within the Etna Park, including Sant’Alfio, Linguaglossa, Milo, Zafferana Etnea, Mascali, and Castiglione di Sicilia.

One of the features that makes Etna Hazelnuts so special is where they grow. Many orchards are located at elevations of up to 1,000 metres above sea level. The cool climate, the large difference between day and night temperatures, and the mineral-rich volcanic soil all help produce hazelnuts with excellent flavour and quality, appreciated by both consumers and professionals.

The hazelnuts ripen between August and September, while the harvest usually takes place from September to October. Once fully ripe, the nuts naturally fall to the ground and are collected. After harvesting, the outer husk is removed, and the hazelnuts are carefully dried using traditional methods that preserve their flavour and quality.

After a period of decline, hazelnut farming on Mount Etna is growing once again. More and more local farmers are restoring old orchards or planting new ones, encouraged by increasing demand and by consumers looking for high-quality products with a certified origin. Interest in Etna Hazelnuts continues to grow, and the future of this traditional crop looks very promising.

This renewed interest is also supported by the ongoing process to obtain European PGI/PDO recognition, together with plans to establish a consortium dedicated to protecting and promoting Etna Hazelnuts. This project aims to strengthen the identity of this historic product and increase its value in both Italian and international markets.
